My buddy called me this afternoon with a HUGE problem. He quite his job with a rental house, and started his own mechanic business awhile back. Until today he had been working with a 3/4 ton Dodge, flatbed, truck that he had added tool boxes, etc to.
He was doing fine when he started, but between his existing customers, ones he picked up on his own, and a few I sent his way when I couldn't get to them in time (and we now share), he got swamped with work, and the truck became way too small in a hurry.
Now, the problem..... When he called me today, his truck had just broken the U-bolts holding the rear axel. The result was major damage in the way of broken springs, a mangled driveline, a severly damaged fuel tank, etc, etc, etc.
As it stands, he's stuck with nothing but a Toyota pickup and a small trailer, so he's essentially out of business until he can find another truck.
He's been looing for a truck for awhile now, and I've been helping him look. Right now I've got a line on my Dad's old C6500. He sold it to the guys he was working for and he was the only one to ever drive it. Since Dad's now, basically, being forced to quit working due to medical issues with his shoulder (not to mention he told then when he turned 70 in August he was packing it up), and they really don't have anyone to put in it, I'm hoping they may be willing to let it go.
Even so, I figured I'd hedge my bets and ask around on here to see if anyone knows of a mechanics truck for sale for a reasonable price. By reasonable, I'm going to say under $30,000. I know my buddy has found quite a few trucks for way over that, but those aren't in the budget.
What he needs, and has been looking for size wise, is something like a C6500, Kodiac, F650, FL70, etc. Basically a larger truck, but still under 26,001 Gross so there is no CDL requirements.
This size truck will typically have a 6000 to 8000 lb crane, and having a crane is mandatory. That's one of the things that was killing him the most with the flatbed he had.
I know I said he's been looking for a larger truck, but at the moment I think he'd be willing to settle for even a usable F450, etc as long as it was equipped with at least a 6,000 lb crane. Any less and it's pretty much worthless for the equipment he's working on, just as it would be for me.
That said, if anyone knows of a good mechanics, crane, truck for sale anywhere East of the Mississippi, please let me know, and I will pass it on.

Today's Featured Article - Listening to Your Tractor - by Curtis Von Fange. Years ago there was a TV show about a talking car. Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo.
