When you save these photos to an external drive, you'll have plenty of room to organize them efficiently. The most common methods are by Date and by Topic. So make 2 folders on your external drive called Date and Topic. In the Date folder you can have other folder like 2017, 2016, 2015, etc and since every picture taken with digital cameras records the date when the picture was taken, you can easily find that date and store it in the proper year folder.
In the Topic folder you have more flexibility depending on your interests like manufacturers, shows, implements etc.
So each photo that you copy over to your external hard drive will be stored TWICE, once under the proper date and once under the proper topic. This doubles up on the copying effort but in the long run it is now much easier to track down a particular photo.
