I needed to shred some land that had had some trees removed and was rougher than I wanted to do with my good 3pt shredder, so I hooked an old, beat up IH 5' pull behind shredder to my D19 Allis. It still had the same one way hydraulic cylinder on it.
I hit the lever and raised the shredder. Then pushed the lever the other way to lower it, and the shredder didn't lower. I thought, "What the heck?"
I picked the back end of the shredder up with my loader tractor to get pressure off the hydraulic hose, unplugged the hose from the tractor, and took the coupler off the end of the hose. Let the loader down, and the shredder wouldn't go down. Took the hose off the cylinder, and it still wouldn't go down. Took the cylinder off completely, and the shredder went down.
Put a different cylinder on the shredder and it works fine. I used it all afternoon.
I never saw a cylinder lock up like that. With no hoses connected, the piston won't move. It did move once, as I did raise the shredder with it. Next rainy day, I'll take it apart. I may have to use a press to push the piston out.
