In small town America the only thing worse than having a Walmart in your town is not having one. Whether you like them or hate them you have to admire SOME of the things they have done. Much of the laurels Walmart is currently resting is simply they were the first large retailer to understand the power of computers in retail, with computers they tightened up their inventory (1% of everything on Walmart store shelves across the nation is a really BIG number). They built a really big distribution system that gave them an advantage over their competition, and they are of a size that a lot of their trucks after leaving that last store empty stops and loads with inbound freight for the distribution system, some of the other big retailers who had/have distribution systems didn't use them to their full advantage or exploit their full capabilities. That being said I would say there is 50% chance that in the next 30 years Walmart will choke and someone will knock them off, much like has happened to Sears, and we actually maybe seeing the beginnings of that with Amazon.
