The big thing lately is "ransomware" where they encrypt your files and then demand a sum of money to decrypt them. In that case there is definitely a profit motive.
Other sites either steal or get you to willingly divulge your personal information so that they can steal your identity. Again, pure profit motive there.
People that are not always thinking clearly are the most vulnerable. Maybe elderly, medicated, or just plain lacking in common sense. If you have someone like that in your life please keep an eye out for them.
