Yes, no split required. It's likely a displaced retainer ring that allows the shaft excess end play. With the tractor shut off, for obvious reasons, see if the shaft moves back and forth, I think an 1/8" + is too much.
Drain all 3 compartments, trans, hydraulics, and differential. Remove the 4 bolts on the pto assembly on the back and pull the shaft out. Seal, retainer ring, collar ( I think and bearing if I recall the parts needed. I used an appropriate size pipe to push one of the parts down the shaft, worked well. Look at the assembly in exploded view, its an easier repair for sure.
I think what happens is the pto shaft on the mower, is not sliding freely and at some point applies enough force to displace the retaining ring. Make sure the shaft on the mower slides easily, so it moves as needed.
On the refill of the compartments, there is the concern that if you use 90 wt in the rear, and hydraulic oil in the hydraulic compartment, they can mix if the seal between them is leaking, so it has been recommended to use the 134D or equivalent in all 3 compartments. Those seals, I believe require a split to replace, That was a recommendation by Ford a long time ago.
