: : My 1948 MH-20 is oil fouling (Autolite 386)spark plugs every 5-6 hours in two cylinders. Before I think about ring replacement, is there any other (a little hotter?) plugs (Champions or?)that will work in this Continental 4 cyl. engine? Any other ideas why I'm fouling so quickly? This is a tractor used only for boat launching every weekend; new rings seems excessive. Runs great otherwise! Thanks! : You could try some heavier weight oil, to help control the oil burning, and you should be able to get hotter plugs too, I don't have a spark plug book handy to check with, but try yer atomotive supply house and see what thet can get you! You need a higher insulation on the plug with carries the heat away from the core slowly! Oh and one other thing I hear of that works is a unit that screws in to the plug hole and then ya put the plug back in, this lifts the plug away form all the oil slooping around in the combustion chamber, I just cann't think of the brand name of these lifter deals! Randy Swain Last I looked (about last March) Champion plugs to fit the tractor engines the vintage of that continental had a series gap in the plug that is suppose to make them handle oil better. Since my tractor isn't an oil user I went with another brand. Don't want to fix a problem I don't have. You'd want a D-17 or D-18 in champion, I think. Rings sometimes get stuck from sitting. There are motor honeys that are alleged to loosen up stuck rings. On that engine could be valve stem seals. The rocker arm shaft has (had!) plain old corks to hold the oil in for lubricating the rocker arms. When the corks rot out, I think the oil riser is at the back end so there's be more oil at the back of the head than the front. I've just built a new rocker arm shaft for my MF-135 to cure that problem but I don't have it in yet. Gerald
