Recently worked on a neighbor's 42 inch Craftsman. It worked when he parked it in shed. Sounds funny right? So I had him pull it out of shed. Discovered the fuse fell out when he parked it. Simple fix, but then hydrostat wouldn't work.
My JD 275 has a filter and a way to change hydro fluid, but the cheapie mowers don't. I googled how to change fluid. Discovered the only way to change fluid on cheapie is to remove hydro, turn it upside down and drain fluid out vent hole on top. Then measure how much oil your drain and add that much new. Final step is to purge air out of the pump.
So I decided to jack up one side rear wheel. Had neighbor start mower, put it in forward while I turned the rear wheel forward. Rear wheel slowly started moving. Had neighbor put it in reverse, I moved tire backward. After doing that a few times, we got the air out of pump. Now it works like it should.
Possible when neighbor pulled it out of shed, he didn't have tranny rod pulled out causing the problem. So now it's running when last used.
