About a dozen years ago, a large cloud came over our house, but it produced no rain. About that time, we had a very loud boom and an instantaneous flash that made our whole family see spots for a few seconds. My son was on the computer at the time and blew out the computer, also the monitor and the modem. (I later put in a new power supply to fix the computer) Anyway, every appliance in our whole house that happened to be plugged into an outlet was ruined. Everything that was NOT plugged into an outlet was okay. We just so happened to have our computer hooked up to one of those surge protectors, the one that advertises that the company would fix everything up to $50,000 should damage occur. The company made up send it in to be tested and they told us that nothing was wrong with it, that our computer got ruined by "static in the air, not through the surge protector". (Funny how everything else that got plugged in got fried, but all other unplugged appliances were okay) Luckily, we had no fire or damage to the house except for a few shingles and IIRC, home insurance paid for a few of the other items.
