Had forgotten about this, but riding the school bus when a kid and we happened to be passing this pasture with cows. All of a sudden, there was a super-bright flash and we saw the bolt hit right between two cows, about 5' apart. One fell over; the other was raised off the ground! Heard later that one died, but don't know which.

Lightning rods "do" attract static charges from the air, which help to trigger more strikes. That's part of their purpose. The other part of purpose is the heavy wire/cable that directs that lightning to ground. ...Never have understood why some folks/electricians/contractors would run the wires "through" the house!!
