Two completely different devices (both called surge protectors) exist. The expensive one does not even claim to protect from surges (including direct lightning strikes). The other and tens of times less expensive solution even has numbers that define protection from direct lightning strikes.
So many stories of damage - all traceable to what the human did not do. That even includes why cattle get killed.
In this case, plug-in protectors not only do not claim to protect from potentially destructive surges (see its spec numbers). It can even make surge damage easier. In rare cases, even cause fires (which explains why APC finally admitted some 15 million of their protectors must be removed immediately).
Stories are nice. But says nothing if one does not learn from them. Protection from direct lightning strikes was even routine over 100 years ago. Unfortunately, many did not discuss these well proven solutions.
