Follow Old's advice and do not jump a 6 volt battery with 12 volts. Think of battery acid blowing up in your eyes when the top blows off the six volt battery. If you do jump, remove the cables from the battery first and clamp the jumper cables to the battery cables when they are off the battery. Jocco too has a good suggestion. The starter switch consists of a short copper bar that touches two copper buttons to make the starter spin. The copper button on the starter frame and in the switch housing can become worn so far the copper bar can't touch it any more. If the bar can't touch those two buttons the starter won't spin. Very common problem.

After two summers of having to park my old 1964 model 4000 gas 4 cyl. on a hill just in case the 6 volt system, for whatever reason, would not crank her, I decided to try the 12 volt conversion. After some research of convert or not, I decided to go ahead, the main reason being that this tractor was a working tractor, not a show tractor (yet).
