You can remove the side covers without draining the oil.
I would start there, remove the covers, start it up and look inside with a flashlight. Look for oil swirling below the surface, that is a sign of a bad relief valve. Oil pouring from above is a sign of bad cylinder seals. No oil movement at all could be a bad pump.
Whatever you do though, don't reach in there with it running!
With the engine off, you can reach below the oil surface, feel for the control linkage to see if it has come loose. If it suddenly stopped working, that is probably the reason. You will need to drain the oil to repair it though.
In the picture in the link, the picture is sideways and the pump has been removed. The pump is mounted to the plate on the bottom of the case.
