I worked for the Texas agency that regulates Public Water Supplies (not private wells) and for the past 9 years have managed the operation of my rural water system. For an irrigation well the mineral content is more important. My water comes from a limestone aquifer and is somewhat alkaline but has a fairly high mineral content. If fact the fluoride in one of our wells exceeded the regulatory limit and we had to plug it. About a mile east of our well the water will kill grass. Mineral content can lead to buildup in the soil. As for plumbing fixtures, I Was changing faucets and ice makers annually until I got a water softener. If you haven't already done it I'd recommend a chemical analysis for minerals, especially salts.

Today's Featured Article - Oil Bath Air Filters - by Chris Pratt. Some of us grew up thinking that an air filter was a paper thing that allowed air to pass while trapping dirt particles of a particles of a certain size. What a surprise to open up your first old tractor's air filter case and find a can that appears to be filled with the scrap metal swept from around a machine shop metal lathe. To top that off, you have a cup with oil in it ("why would you want to lubricate your carburetor?"). On closer examination (and some reading in a AC D-14 service manual), I found out that this is a pretty ingenious method of cleaning the air in the tractor's intake tract.
