Further to Rusty's post- you started the tractor on gas, from the small tank, and once it warmed up, switched over to distillate. BUT when it was time to shut it down, you had to switch back to gas, so the carb would have gas in it for the next start up. If the carb was still full of distillate, the tractor wouldn't start next time (although some said if you remembered immediately, while engine was still hot, it would often start back up so you could shut it down properly- but the next morning? forget it). Many a young lad forgot that step, and dad may have been a bit stern with him!
