And there's one fewer than there used to be! I bought an MM 4 Star Super from an old boy out of Cole Camp, which is south of Sedalia, a few years back.

He wasn't very prosperous, but was a gracious host and a very nice guy- cold drinks, sit in the shade and talk a bit after the deal was made. I had a guy with a semi who would haul it, but I didn't know when- he kept a list of stuff around the country that he could finish out a load with, but could be up to a year. He was hauling it 1,900 miles for 500 bucks, so I was in no hurry. The seller's driveway was really steep, and he wasn't sure a semi could make it, so he said he'd haul it to Sedalia, about 15 miles, if the hauler gave him a day's notice.

The great day finally arrived, and the hauler told me the story: The guy was there with the tractor, and it was running. But he told the hauler "Don't kill it when you load, because the battery's shot, I jumped it with my pickup." Hauler told him that wasn't going to work, because he had 3 other tractors on the load, and he needed them to run so he could shuffle them around as need be. And here's where the hauler was grinning and shaking his head. "The old boy went out to his pickup, started it up, then took the BRAND NEW BATTERY out of the pickup and put it on the Moline. I couldn't believe it." And the hauler made me make a solemn promise that I would send the guy money for a new battery, which of course, I did.

Don't know if everyone in Missouri is that accommodating, Old, but I was sure impressed.

Today's Featured Article - Tuning-Up Your Tractor: Plugs & Compression Testing - by Curtis Von Fange. The engine seems to run rough. In the exhaust you can hear an occasion 'poofing' sound like somethings not firing on all cylinders. Under loaded conditions the tractor seems to lack power and it belches black smoke out of the exhaust. For some reason it just doesn't want to start up without cranking and cranking the starter. All these conditions can be signals that your unit is in need of a tune up. Ok, so what is involved in a tune up? You say, swap plugs and file the points....now tha ... [Read Article]
