We work on a lot of IH trucks and the DT 466 had to be the best medium duty truck engine ever built. There are still thousands of them out there running every day. We rebuilt a DTA 466 last week. The DT 466 E engines had a few faults to start with but were soon worked out and they are a very good engine also. Then along came the MaxForce and IH was in trouble.Blame a lot of it on our wonderful EPA emission standards. EGRs and regen systems. I really don't know all the reasons why IH dropped the DT But it may be their demise. IH parts for the older trucks is second to none,if you have a good dealer and we do. Freightliner is about the only real competition IH has in the Medium duty market today. They need to wake up, if they are going to continue, in my opinion. One of my customers has 3 Internationals and 2 Freightliners. The Freightliners always have a problem and the old Internationals just keep trucking.
