I was once in the process of buying several hundred dollars worth of parts at our local NAPA store when the phone rang. The owner was by himself, and talked on the phone for about 15 minutes.
When I commented that I would think a customer standing there with his checkbook in his hand should take priority over a phone call, he told me he did 80% of his business over the telephone. And with a community college in town with strong auto mechanics, auto body, and diesel programs, among others, I wasn't in a position to argue.
One time, though, I needed a bearing for a Mercruiser outdrive. The bearing had spun in the housing and part of the part number was obliterated. I went to a local Precision Bearing store and asked about a replacement. A dumpy little guy on the counter with a cigar in his face took one look at it and said, "It would be a &*%$(*^ waste of time to even try finding it".
I told him they weren't the only bearing place in town. I then went several blocks down the street to another bearing store. I handed my bearing to a rather friendly fellow behind the counter. He reached into his shirt pocket, got out a caliper, took a couple of measurements, reached onto the shelf behind him, and handed me an exact replacement. That really fried me. I got the manager of Precision Bearing on the phone and unloaded on him at length about the dork he had on his counter.
A couple of weeks later, I had to go into Precision Bearing on business for my day job. The dork with the cigar in his face was nowhere to be seen. It was early in the morning when he should have been there. I guess draw your own conclusions.
