Steve, Many reasons for the outdoor wood furnace, Fire danger is removed from the home, no smoke or ash removal,no dust from the bark of the wood, no cleanup as required for an inside wood furnace. Even though we are going to heat with the outdoor wood boiler-furnace, we will keep the indoor furnace ready in case we are forced to re-start that operation.At some time, the outdoor furnace may burn out and leak,we still have backup.Inside wood furnace and oil furnace.
