Hi, as the other Jim says if the spring is broken it is causes the throwout bearing to always contact the pressure plate fingers. Eventually the throwout bearing seizes and wares the fingers off the pressure plate and eventually someday you go to step on the clutch to stop the tractor and the clutch doesn't release.
If you have no free play that probably indicates the clutch pads are worn. On the 54/74/84/85/95 series tractors as the clutch pads ware the clutch pedal free play decreases. Try adjusting the clutch pedal. There is an inspection plate that can be removed on the bottom of the clutch housing but really can't see much other than throwout bearing and pressure plate. The springs also get weak on the pressure plate. Very easy tractor to do a clutch replacement if there is no front end loader. Replace, pilot and throwout bearings, clutch with 6 pad clutch and pressure plate.
