Couple of my tips, from Montgomery, I head up 71 or go over and get on 49 to Shreveport, take a left. Dallas, oh if your around Canton, Tx (I'm not sure if it's first Monday?) but have a really good swap meet.
Dallas to Denton, north on 287 towards Amarillo. Couple of state parks to see on the way. I liked them, just look it up.
From Amarillo you can head up to Trinidad, Co. or take I40 Albuquerque. I like the Colorado route. Now some have said the snow might bother you, so I would recommend heading across from Trinidad towards Farmington, NM, pretty country, I worked on a lot of wells in the Carson National Forest in the 80's. Wind up in Durango and 4 corners area. I lived in Farmington 6 years and don't remember it snowing before Halloween. Not sure if the Durango to Silverton railroad is running at that time, but it's a great trip. Short drive over to Mesa Verde, in Cortez. Go up in Utah, unbelievable sites.
Me, I would head back thru Albuquerque, go over to the state line and go south to see Fort Sumner and check if Billy the Kid was still there. Then Roswell to see if the aliens are still there. If time permits, Carlsbad (pretty sure the holes are still there). My wife hates my Roswell tee shirt.

I can think of a few common, ordinary sounds in my daily life, too.
