The father of a HS classmate of mine (class of 1967) flew Hellcats off WWII carriers late in the war. Late in the war, he was never in combat. After the war he took a job at a local company and eventually became company pilot flying a twin engine (I believe) Cessna.
During senior week in 67 (when seniors were not required to attend classes the week before graduation) his plane developed engine trouble upon landing at the private company airport. His plane crashed and all aboard were killed. I well remember the tragedy.
His son, my classmate, joined the Navy after college and became a pilot of a 4 engine anti submarine plane. If my information is correct, he eventually made Admiral.
I'll be seeing him at our 50 year anniversary in about a month.
