The pilot, flying a TBM Avenger, encounters heavy flak on a mission over Chichi Jima. His plane is hit and his engine bursts into flames. He flys the crippled plane several miles out to sea where he and his radioman/gunner bail out. The gunner's parachute fails to open and he is killed but the pilot lands safely. About 4 hours later submarine USS Finback, on lifeguard duty, picks him up and takes him back to his home carrier. The pilot, in later life, is our 41st President. George H W Bush
