: : : : : ALWAYS been hard to start, especially in cold weather. : : : any suggestions? : : The small diesels all have glow plug starting aids. They are activated by turning the key to the extreme left, or a position just ahead of start. There may be others too. Anyway , these are like toaster coils, and will burn out in time. Generally, they screw into the intake manifold near the opening. Take the wire off, and remove it from manifold. Test it with a battery, if its good , it will glow!! good luck Cyrus : ~~ There are water heaters available to insert in : ~~ your radiator hose to keep the engine temperature : ~~ up. Also there used to be dipstick heaters to heat : ~~ engine oil. Either or both of these in addition : ~~ to a tarp/blanket can usually help on cold : ~~ nights. All of these suggestions may help, but they didnt help me. My Satoh used to be hard to crank in cold weather as well. I first checked the glow plugs (OK but still won't crank)). I then put in fresh fuel (OK, no crank). I adjusted the valves (no crank). I rebuilt the starter to increase cranking rpm's (no crank). I installed a battery with higher cranking amps (no crank). I added a block heater that goes into the freeze plug (really warmed the motor but no crank). Finally I determined that the rings needed to be replaced as I had to much blow-by indicating lost compression. I replaced the rings and honed the cylinders and it has been running since. After the new rings, it had so much compression that I had to pull it off with a truck. Once fired, I let it run at idle for twelve hours to set the rings. I now rarely even have to use the glow plugs. (Low compression = low compression temperature = no auto-ignition = broke tractor) Email me if you need any technical info or parts house locations.
