Every time you perform any kind of non-cash transaction, you are giving the other party your personal information. If you write a check, you are giving the recipient your name, address, telephone number, bank account number, and bank routing number. If you use a credit card, you are giving the vendor your account number, your name and address, the expiration date of your card, as well as any other information encoded in that card. You are completely dependent upon the honesty of the recipient along with the protection of the law. The opportunities for a "hacker" to obtain this information are just about infinite. Yet, while this information is the next thing to a public record, we do not often get "hacked" by the crooks. Apparently the protection of the law is a big deterrent. In any case, I personally think that the criminals are after bigger fish than you and I. After all, if they get my money, they wouldn't be getting much. Most of mine is tied up in tangible assets rather than cash.
