The problem is they are kind of finicky about the choke. Ours is the same way and has been for over 40 years. I just ran a WD-9 last week and it was the same. Just have to play with the choke to smooth it out. There is not much adjustment to those old carbs. If the coil is getting hotter than normal your ground out, wire is not hooked up or you need to shut the switch off to the coil. The butterfly in the manifold closes the carb side of the air off when changed over. also shuts the needle in the carb so it doesn't bounce while using the tractor. I would not switch it back from diesel to gas for experimentation. I would shut it down and restart it for trial purposes.
