: I have a 1944 John Deere B that I am going to restore and need to know if they had poured bearings or inserts on the rods and mains. Also was wondering how to take up excess crank endplay. : Scott, : 1944 "Bs" have babbit mains and rods, you may find that the rods have been replaced with the newwer insert type, wich will work fine. You can adjust the bearing clearances on the mains and rods by adding or removeing shims, insert type rods have no shims instead you install appropriate size bearing insert. To set flywheel endplay you lossen flywheel and posistion it in on the crankshaft to obtain correct endplay, .006 to .010 thousands and then tighten it back up.
