How proficient are you as an operator? I have had a dozer or a track loader for about 35 years and just operate occasionally. First I had a Caterpillar D 7 and now have a JD 450 C track loader. I hire more custom work gone than I do with my machine because a highly skilled operator can accomplish about twice as much as I can. Unless you are a good operator the job will cost you far more than it will cost to hire a custom operator. If you enjoy the sport,go ahead and rent one for a couple days and see how you get along. It is costly entertainment. If you are a good operator, the only saving is an operator's wages, You also have to pay delivery and the cast of hauling it back to the rental place. An excavator is faster and you lpse less dirt.
