Actually "assault rifle" is a real weapon term that has been around since WW2. The definition means a select fire (semi auto to full auto) rifle that fires a medium powered round. The AR 15 is not an assault rifle, it is a strictly semi auto rifle that shoots a light caliber medium to low powered rifle round.
An "Assault Weapon" is a political term dreamed up by the media and politicians to describe any weapon they feel individuals should not own. It can be a 10-22 rifle to a bolt action 30-06 to a pump shotgun.
Apparently the rifle used in this shooting was a fully automatic rifle (illegal unless you have a special license) fired from one gun free zone into another gun free zone. Considering all the laws he broke to carry out this shooting does anyone think adding another one or two would have changed his mind? Any legal fully automatic weapon (in good working condition) starts out around $15,000 and goes up from there.
