Guy that was Dad's original Deere diesel tech of choice supposedly had a V-4 pony engine on a go-kart. I never saw it, but supposedly it was really fast.
Dad bought an R just before X-mas of '63. The 2-cylinder pony was gutless, we tried starting it one day it was about 35 degrees out. Went thru two cups of gas and still didn't have the big engine warm enough to roll over continuously. When we actually did fieldwork with it we'd start it in morning and let it idle at noon, and shut it off only when we were done for the day. Township road commissioner hounded Dad for a month or two to buy the danged thing, about end of April Dad let him have it, still had 16 acres left to plow! Road Comm. wanted to run a heavy duty rototiller to chew up scarified roads. He knocked the PTO out every year of the three years he ran it. We never hooked a single thing to the PTO, just engaged it when we needed hydraulics. Road Comm. replaced the R with a a 770 Oliver diesel, never had a seconds problem with that running the rototiller.
Neighbor had a pony start 730-D. Pony would only be about half wound up and he'd engage the clutch and decompression lever and turn the pony off because the big engine was running that fast. But did prove how gutless the 2-cylinder pony in the R was. I actually never remember Dad running the R. He said it was MY tractor, he put Char-Lynn power-assist steering on it For Me. I think he hated it more than I did. Anything the R could do the Super M-TA did faster!
