: I have a Allis Chamlers 1950 and I got a FMJ type 2 : magneto that needs to be put in.How do I wind up the gear and put into slot with out : taking my fingers. Is there a special tool that I need? I've not installed one, but since the spring winding is part of the impulse starter only effective at low speeds (cranking speeds) I suggest you turn the engine to a position well away from firing, or just after firing and back up the magneto to that point just after the impulse pawls trip and install it then with no wind up needed. You still may need to adjust the timing. No doubt the shop manual would give a procedure for accomplishing this. I think its made by Fairbanks-Morse. Gerald
