I built my house around zone heating/cooling. The main heat source is a whole house wood stove but for those days like you mention, or for remote parts of the house I use wall mounted Infrared heaters of varying BTUs of 5 to 35k hooked to my 500 gallon Propane tank. Where I want quiet safe heat, like in a bedroom, I use portable, electric, oil filled, radiators, which are getting to be much more popular today vs when I bought my first one 20 years ago.
The infrared heaters do not require venting and work much much better than an open flame free standing unit like Dearborn makes/made (don't know if they still do) which works better if vented.
