I have a smell that smells like burning rubber on a John Deere 6620 sidehill combine. No noises, no smoke, no problems with any function of the combine. The smell doesn't get any worse with time and does sort of go away when you stop the separator. Doesn't matter if you are in 250 or 150 bushel corn. With the cab door open and separator not running there is really no smell, but it will come up to the cab when you engage the separator probably due to air movement around the belts, chains, and sprockets under the cab. Immediately after shutting down the separator and engine I can't feel any belts that are excessively warm. All of the belts are running straight, and all idlers seem to be OK. The warmest belts are the belts that come off of the engine power shaft, down to an idler, and then down to the hydro. They are warm but not extremely hot. Seems like it might be more of a cab side smell. The big flat belt that serves as the separator clutch and drive is just warm, but I did tighten it up some. I can't find any unusual wear on the top or sides of any belt like something would be hitting and wearing into it. I don't believe it is the brakes as I don't even use them and the drums are loose on the shafts (shoes not making contact) last week when I was underneath of the combine. Everything electrical works as it should. As with most JD combines of that vintage several of the hydraulic hoses under the cab are damp with hydraulic oil, but not leaking. Have wondered if a belt has soaked up some oil and when it gets warm it is giving off this smell??? Also, combine only has 600 bushel ran through it so far this fall. Just got started today. Still a little wet in Southeast Iowa. Seeking ideas you might have ran across. Might not find the problem until something finally fails or maybe it will go away. Oh, I did just buy a new fire extinguisher. Thanks.

Today's Featured Article - Grain Threshing in the Early 40's - by Jerry D. Coleman. How many of you can sit there and say that you have plowed with a mule? Well I would say not many, but maybe a few. This story is about the day my Grandfather Brown (true name) decided along with my parents to purchase a new Ford tractor. It wasn't really new except to us. The year was about 1967 and my father found a good used Ford 601 tractor to use on the farm instead of "Bob", our old mule. Now my grandfather had had this mule since the mid 40's and he was getting some age on him. S
