Forgot about a couple of other stories. One night several years ago, I had gas bubbles stuck in my stomach, so was outside walking up and down the driveway. Had a flashlight, but was nice just walking in the dark. Got near the end and thought I noticed something unusual to my left. Turned the flashlight on briefly, but that was all I needed! I had just walked right past a large, old skunk that was walking the opposite direction!! Couldn't have been more than 3' away from me!! Needless to say I just waited there for a while, until the coast was clear.
I discovered a little trick some years back. Used to have a skunk that would come right up onto the steps and eat the cat's food. I opened up the door one night and, sure enough, there was the skunk on the step; it's tail now in a raised position. I went back and got my 2 million candlepower spotlight and shined it on the skunk. it didn't like the light, and shortly after left. After that, I've found that this was something I could do at any time after dark, when it's too dark to try and shoot. Sometimes they'll be a bit stubborn and won't want to go, so I'll have to use the spotlight along with stomping on the ground and growling like a bear. I keep back about 150' to 200', and the skunk won't waste a spray since it knows it won't hit me, and also that I'm far enough away to not pose it a mortal threat. I've chased skunks 1/4 mile using just the spotlight.
