I don't necessarily agree with a lot of the politics of California. I am over 50 years old, but for about as long as I can remember, the jokes I heard with reference to California were "the People's Republic of California." I had the chance to listen to a presentation about the state of the roads and bridges in Minnesota about half a dozen years ago. It was rather concerning listening to what was said and what was shown in the presentation. I suspect this is similar to a lot of other places in this country. We have an aging infrastructure and it doesn't matter if we are talking about roads, bridges, public water supply systems, public wastewater treatment systems, telecommunications systems, power distribution systems, etc. There was a lot of money spent in this country building all this infrastructure. The interstate highway system was promoted heavily during the Eisenhower administration in the late 1950's, as an example. There are a lot of these systems which have "seen better days." Highway funding dollars come from fuel surcharge taxes and license fees. As fuel economy increases in our individual vehicles, the amount of money put towards highways gradually decreases. I will add that I remember when a lot of rail lines were abandoned, vacated, and removed, further putting a strain on our nation's roads with a lot of this replaced with truck hauling. By no means do I place blame on trucks or truckers. Our transportation system has evolved and the demands upon it have evolved and changed, too. I think we can safely say we, as Americans, probably drive more than we ever have, too. I suspect we are going to see this entire tax structure shift some, too. I suspect we are going to see at some time, some sort of "consumption tax" or "user fee/tax" on consumer goods and services, whereby those who use more of these tangible and intangible items will pay more, while those who use less, will pay less. I believe all states have an obligation to have a balanced budget, thus reducing the possibility of doing what our federal government does in borrowing and spending more than it takes in. Like it or not, our federal government is at $20 trillion in debt and still growing. This same sort of mentality cannot be sustained indefinitely and the most likely result will be an increase in tax revenues and some spending cuts in order to start getting our fiscal house in order. Do I like paying taxes and fees any more than the next guy? Absolutely not! I would like to see a United States of America for generations to come and I recognize it WILL take some "belt tightening."

"Run in the house and get me a...."as I open th
