I went out to start my 8N a few months ago and it failed to start, so I tinkered with the carb for a minute and it started. The next time I went to start it, it would not start. This time I put new points and condenser in it. It still would not start. I checked for fire and I was getting fire. I rebuilt the carb and it still would not start. I could pull it off and it would start and run good, but it would not start. I went to a tractor dealer in the area and he talked me into rebuilding the motor, saying the compression rings were worn. He said the the job would cost approximately $1500 if no problems were found if they did it. It was blowing back through the oil filler and you would have to choke it even if it was hot to start it. Instead of having it the motor rebuilt I decided to do it myself. I did the whole thing, new sleeves, rings, new pistons, valves springs and guides, main and rod bearings. Once complete, I was ready to hear the first pop of my rebuild engine, but there was no pop. I checked everything and still no pop. I pulled it off and it started and ran great, just like before. I could not get it started with the starter even though I was getting fire to every plug. I talked to several people including the tractor dealer service department and they all said it couldn't be the coil even though I suspected it. After checking everything including the compression I bought a coil anyway. Not only did I get a pop, it started up and is starting and running great! The story I am trying to convey is to check that compression if someone says to rebuild the motor. I am sure I wasn't far from rebuilding or replacing the rings but I probably could have waited awhile had I checked the compression. So there is such a thing as a Weak coil.
