: I have a Cockshutt 30 with a bad flywheel ring gear, I can't find a new one to fit. Can the bad teeth be welded up and filed down? I'm thinking about doing this, and turning the gear on the flywheel so the starter will be hitting a different spot. I have two bad spots about 5 inches long 180 degrees from each other. Will this work? I'm not a mechanic, just another tractor nut.

Looks like your idea is the only shot you have. I have done this successfully on at 6.2 L. Diesel chevy. I didin't have the luxury of rotating the ring gear 90 degrees. And since it was a V-8 it had 4 bad spots.
