: I have a Cockshutt 30 with a bad flywheel ring gear, I can't find a new one to fit. Can the bad teeth be welded up and filed down? I'm thinking about doing this, and turning the gear on the flywheel so the starter will be hitting a different spot. I have two bad spots about 5 inches long 180 degrees from each other. Will this work? I'm not a mechanic, just another tractor nut. Don't know your tractor, but might consider reversing the ring gear on the flywheel. May need to grind a bevel on the inside of the ring to let it fit in place. Then each tooth may need a little grinding to put the correct bevel on it for easy starter drive engagement. Most ring gears have the bevel ground on one side.
