: : Is it possible to repair small holes in an engine block caused by a thrown rod? Defects measure about 1 1/4 inches in diameter and are located about 3 inches above the oil pan and do not involve the water jacket. : Gayle, it can be done. You have two choices: JB Weld (epoxy), which I've never tried but have seen several posts testifying to it's effectiveness, and arc welding with cast iron rod. See the link below for more details on welding cast, as well as posts on the subject on the Farmall board. There is another alternative that can be very effective as well. If the area to be repaired is *relatively* flat, a plate metal patch can be applied to the outside of the block. It requires drilling and tapping a series of holes around the damaged area in the block, and making a matching patch to cover the hole. You also need to cut a *thick* gasket to fit and use plenty of gasket sealer when applying the patch. It's not pretty, but is very effective, and does not require the equipment or expertise of welding. I've repaired two broken blocks using this method.
