: Has anyone converted from a gas pup to electric starter for the deisel.
: Can I convert gas pup magneto to a conventional ignition system (coil)?
: Any help would be greatly appreciated!
: Thanks.

Caterpillar (as well as aftermarket people) made conversion systems in the 60's but have long since stopped. Occasionally they can still be found but they ain't cheap.

Sorry, but I can't help on the magneto conversion much. At first consideration, the mag gives some advantages in that it does not need an external power source (gen, alt, or batt) and if all you have is a rope you can still start your pony and in turn, the tractor. (Be sure to make good use of the compression releases on the pony if you use the rope or your chiropractor will get rich off of you alone. We generally wind up jump starting the pony on our D6 9U. A hassle true, but we generally only do it once on the days we use the Cat.)

There is lots of good info on old Cats at the ACMOC (Antique Cat Machinery Owners Club) site.

Unless you are from another planet, physically or otherwise, I don’t think our internal combustion buddies will talk and tell us their problems. But, on the other hand, there is a secret language that our mechanical companions readily do speak. It is an interesting form of communication that involves all the senses of the listener. In this series we are going to investigate and learn the basic rudimentary skills of understanding this lingo. ... [Read Article]
