When I bought our place there was a wood burner hooked into the boiler heat system. Previous owners took the stove. I put in an airtight coal stove. Not hooked to boiler. I do not have return ducts, but have registers in the floor. Does a nice job keeping the house comfortable. Single story ranch. For me it works out well and is much less work than burning wood. Not saying that's what you need or want, but it works for me. It keeps the house around 65-68 when it's 25-30 out. After that the fuel boiler helps out. Just an option.
