Guess I'm writing this just to try and help me deal with our loss. Last Saturday morning we took Gigi for her last rip to the vet. Vet was very understanding and really made it as easy as it could possibly be.
16 years ago first of December we drove from Oklahoma to Maryland to get Gigi when she was 9 weeks old. We had previously made a trip to the east coast and stopped by an old friend for a visit. He and his wife had just picked up a rescue Papillon female from the pound and my wife fell in love with her. Unbeknown to all of us at the time the new rescue was pregnant. My friend found out when he took her to his vet to get her fixed.
When my wife heard the news she said I want one of the puppies and I'm going to Maryland weather you go or not. Of course me being me I thought.. That's crazy driving 3000 miles round trip to pick up a dang dog. My friend had told her she could have first choice so that December off to Maryland we went.
We get to my friends house and found 4 puppies, the one that was colored and marked like the Mom was a male and we really didn't want a male. The other three were female and all black. We kinda figured the Dad was black and breed unknown. We later came to the conclusion he was also much larger than the Mom. Mom was an 8 pound dog and Gigi turned out to be 27 pounds when fully grown.
Anyway, Pat (my wife) sits down in the pen where the puppies were and almost immediately Gigi crawls on her and starts chewing on the rings Pat always wears on her fingers. That was it Gigi was our dog from that day on. We went to pets-mart and bought her a collar, leash and miscellaneous supplys for the trip back. Next morning we picked her up and headed back to Oklahoma.
Gigi's first car ride was a 1500 mile trip sitting on Pat's lap in the front seat of our Caravan. At the time my business involved allot of traveling and usually had Pat and the dog with me. Gigi loved to go anywhere if it involved a ride in a car. I would load her up just to go out and check the mail and of course she had to go anytime either one of us were going anywhere when we weren't going to be out of the car for any length of time. Every person in every drive through around here knew that little black dog. She would talk to them while we were picking up food or going to the bank. Bank always gave he a treat and we thinking that is what she was asking for at all the other drive through s.
When she was not quite a year old we made a trip up into Canada and visited Niagara Falls. Found a little park above the falls where we could let her out and go for a little walk. Was walking along the bank of the Niagara river with Gigi on the leash and the little sh!& jumps in the river. Sure glad I had her on a leash or she would have been a goner. If you have ever been on the river above the falls you know how swift that water runs. No way would she have been able to swim in that current. That is when we discovered she loved water and came to the conclusion her Dad may have been part black lab.
She loved to go the lake and collect rocks. I think she got it from Pat. Pat has always looked for and picked up any rocks that were unique. Gigi must have picked up on pat's rock collecting. She would dive in the lake, pick up a rocks from the bottom of the lake, take it to shore and put in a pile.
For the last 16 years she has been our kid, Pat never had children and my daughter was grown, married and living on the west coast. Now we are discovering just how much of our day centered around our dog. Every day functions that trigger emotions are getting easier to deal with but still miss her. She would lay by the bathroom door when either one of us was in the shower. Pat is still working and she knew when it was time for Pat to be home, feeding time, treat time and in her later years pill time. If it didn't happen, she would remind me by scratching on my pant leg, hey it's time for my pill or whatever it was time for.
Picture is from one of our many trips, chair in a motel room. We could leave her in the room when we had a business meeting. Tell her to be quiet and good till we got back, she wouldn't bark or do anything that would attract motel management. She was just about the perfect travel companion.
I could go on and on about the unique things she would do and how well behaved she was but this is long enough already. Rest in Piece Gigi, you were loved and returned our love ten fold.
