They could be spraying weeds that germinate and start to grow in the fall, take a winter nap and then come up with a vengeance in the spring. Dandelions and musk thistles in pastures and lawns are a couple that come to mind. They are easy to kill in the fall, tougher to kill in the spring. In the fall these weeds can be sprayed with 2-4d or dicambe without worries about drift.
We don’t have any field weeds like that here in northwest Iowa that I know of but areas with only slightly climates than northwest Iowa do have these weeds.
