Very sound advice here, Steve. A significant portion of my day job involves designing hydraulic systems and I would agree that you shouldn't start the project by picking the components. Start with a schematic of what you're doing, figure up all the flows and pressures required, then select the proper components that will give you what is needed. In the case of a log splitter one needs to determine what tonnage and cycle time are desired which in turn will dictate the necessary cylinder size, pressure, and flow rate. The pressure and flow rate can then be used to determine what engine power is required to drive the system. Putting up with a slow cycle time or weak splitting force (or worse yet, both) due to inadequate components would get old really fast so it is best to be sure of what a person needs before purchasing anything.
