I have started responding to your post at least 3 times. I get "too deep," and then I delete what I typed in. I will try to be brief. My father and I couldn't get along for a long time, but I was close to my grandfather. We seemed to tolerate each other for too many years. Dad didn't get along with his father either, but was close to his grandfather. My oldest daughter and I struggled to have a relationship until about a year and a half ago. She could get along with my dad much better. I started making peace with my dad about 20 years ago, and things got progressively better about 15 years ago. I guess I could say my getting married, having children of my own, gaining some age and maturity, along with other life experiences helped me to be a better person. Dad started to mellow with the passing of time, not sweating trivial matters so much, and achieving some financial security after he had struggled for so long was good for him. Without realizing it, we managed to meet in the middle. Are we the "best of buds?" No. We get along quite well. We can have a few drinks together and talk about common interests, something we couldn't do for a long time as we had different interests we had passion about, but the farm is something he grew more passionate about in the last 20 years, and my interest in farming wasn't the a "do or die matter" for me. I still work off the farm and have too good of a career to give it up at this time. That off the farm work experience has made me a much better person than I think I would have been had I "gotten everything I wanted." I have better financial security, and I feel I am a much better and stronger manager. I no longer have the envy and jealousy of my peers, who were "handed the reins" of their father's farm, nor am I ashamed of myself or my "economic status" as I had struggled for those first years after finishing college. I feel very good about what I have accomplished and much of it completely on my own with nobody's help.

Today's Featured Article - Show Coverage: Journey to Ankeny - by Cindy Ladage. We left Illinois on the first day of July and headed north and west for Ankeny, Iowa. Minus two kids, we traveled light with only the youngest in tow. As long as a pool was at the end of our destination she was easy to please unlike the other two who have a multitude of requirements to travel with mom and dad. Amana Colonies served as a respite where we ate a family style lunch that sustained us with more food than could reasonably fit into our ample physiques. The show at Ankeny
