Purchase clear (no knots)dimension lumber, 2X?) that is the next size wider. If existing is 2X4, use 2X6. Cut the new material to length so it can be bolted to the broken rafter. Rip the new material in an arc so that it is now in a shallow crescent shape. Start at one end bolting the new into place about every foot at first, while pushing the upper end flatter so the stress is distributed into the old rafter as you bolt. 1/4inch carrage bolts will do. The bolts near the center can be 2' apart. This can be done on both broken rafters at the same time to assist in the progressive support as the stress is transferred. I have done this 4 times successfully and saved the roof each time. Jim
