Here on the Canadian Prairies, a substantial number of settlers were of Scots descent. Villages and towns placed a high priority on curling rinks, trap shooting fields and ball diamonds. The kids start curling in school, and some go on to be the top of the sport. It's a great game of skill and strategy, played on an ever changing ice surface. It's a great social experience, whether as a player or spectator. Different league rules allow for "shooting sticks"(for no-crouch throwing), and "no sweeping", based purely on ones skill at throwing. Watching a ninety year old consistently lay rocks in the house without sweepers can be a humbling experience.
So far, curling seems to be keeping ahead of the computer age, and the kids are active and willing participants. unc
