Growing up in town we had a lady neighbor who was not the brightest. Although a neighbor mom was always kind to her tried to help her. On many occasions she would come over to see what mom was cooking for supper then she would go home and cook nearly the same thing. At Christmas mom always cooked a real nice fruitcake with candied fruit, raisins, pecans, spices and butter in the batter. Getting the recipe from mom she went home to bake the cake. Next day she came over to ask mom if her cake was spicy hot. Mom replied no so they started reviewing the reciepe: fruit, yes; raisins, yes; pecans, yes; spices, yes; butter, no since she did not have any butter thereforeshe used the drippings from the sausage she had cooked for breakfast. Mom would retell us that story in private each year at Christmas, it's been five years since moms passing and each year I recall the story with a smile.
