: How obsolete is my tractor? : I have an IH 674 Diesel tractor purchased new in : 1974. I used it the first three years to plow, : disk, plant and harvest 100 acres of corn. : But since then, it has only been used a few days : out of the year with a 6' bushog to mow weeds. : Its a beautiful tractor that I have enjoyed using : and still think of as new. I was surprised when : a farmer I was talking to said such an old tractor : isn't worth much because parts are probably hard : to get. : Does anyone know the lay of land as far as product : support from the manufacturer? Are there : different levels of support depending upon the age : of the tractor, or are there just two, supported : and not supported? Also, to what extent has : support of older IH tractors been weakened by the : Case takeover? : My tractor has been such a part of my personal : history, that I am reluctant to part with it, : and I expect I will keep it, and at some point : paint/recondition it. However, I am wondering : whether I whould avoid using it for hard work : because if I break something, I won't be able to : get (affordable) parts. : I would appreciate comments from anyone, and : would especially like to hear from 674 or 574 : owners. Parts are easy to get for the 674! Prices keep walking away with inflation, etc, but the CASE takeover actually improved much of the rebuild parts program. I'd love to have your tractor! I think it's of the cream in tractor milk. The wet brakes are good, but the brake oil supply system is one of it's shortcomings. There are kits for improving it. Also the park brake band on a pinion shaft wheel isn't the best system. But as a utility tractor easy to use, it's great.
