We have spare the air days here when low pressure systems do not allow for dissipation of smoke. If wood is your only source of heat, you may use it. If you remodel or build, you may not have a wood stove. You may have a stove that burns something other than would that has scrubbers and/or a catalytic system. I think you can have a fireplace but it has the same requirements. Often these things greatly limit the amount of heat the unit generates. All new homes and remodels must have fire sprinklers whether you have a home or not (mega bucks. ONly a licensed certified pro can install, not your plumber. No way can you do it.).
Burn barrels have been banned for years.
I was in the Nuns Fire in Sonoma County. Pretty much every home that had a wood pile within 75 feet of the home was lost. The radiant heat and winds were insane. Also, palm trees were the kiss of death. I'm dropping all ours.
It is funny how they would like to ban cigarettes, regulate the air, CARB requirements on diesel, hotlines to turn in violators anonymously, dust control regs, warnings about smoke from the fire, warnings about spare the air day, you may not smoke in your apartment, on and on, yet your neighbor may have a stinky pot garden and smoke you out of house and home. Remember, all those other forms of smoke are bad but pot smoke is good.
